Spartan

Spartan is a formidable industrial area situated within the popular Johannesburg suburb of Kempton Park. Which has been a part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since 2000. Kempton Park was originally recognized in 1903 when a wealthy farmer by the name of Karl Wolff decided that he would sub-divide a percentage of his Zuurfontein farm into residential areas, this area would be named Kempton and later Kempton Park and by 1952 the then Jan Smuts airport would be built on land nearby, which today is known as the OR Tambo International airport, which is within close proximity to both Kempton Park and Spartan.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

The Spartan Industrial area in Kempton Park is between 5km and 8km depending on the route chosen and is believed to take roughly 12 minutes travelling time to get there. It’s slightly longer travelling time to the central business district. It’s between 28km and 33km to get to this part of Johannesburg and travel time is largely dependent on traffic is believed to take just over 30 minutes travel time.

Malls/Shopping

Due to Spartan’s close proximity to the Kempton Park area, there really is a world of shopping nearby from the Birch Acres Mall and the Bonaero Park Shopping Centre. Transport

Due to Spartan’s proximity to the OR Tambo International Airport, the Gautrain is easily accessible via both the airport and the Rhodesfield Gautrain Station which also offer bus services. There is also a Metrorail train station in Kempton Park and the area is also connected via minivan taxis which run all over the greater Gauteng area.

Pomona is a small industrial suburb on the outskirts of Kempton Park. Kempton Park is a town located on the East Rand in Gauteng, and is in close proximity to Johannesburg. On top of being a prime industrial zone, Pomona is also home to many office blocks and parks.

One of the most affluent and fast developing industrial parks in Pomona is Pomona Junction. The park is situated on Boncreation Street and is made up of various A-grade facilities, consisting of industrial offices and warehouses with mezzanines and balconies.

Infrastructure/ Roadways

Pomona allows for exceptionally easy entry onto the major highways of the N12, N17, R21 and R24. This makes commuting to Pomona highly convenient, even for workers residing in outlying suburbs.
Pomona offers basic facilities such as petrol stations, ATMs and two public parks, but Pomona’s infrastructure is still fairly underdeveloped and you won’t find any schools, post offices or hospitals within the vicinity. Bonaero Park, a neighbouring suburb, offers amenities such as Bonaero Park Primary School, Bonaero Park Shopping Centre as well as an SAPS, which are all easily accessible from Pomona.

One of the key factors that make Pomona a favoured industrial zone is its close proximity to OR Tambo International Airport (Africa’s busiest airport). The airport is only around 10 kilometres away from Pomona and expected travel time is around 15 minutes depending on traffic and route.
Johannesburg’s CBD is slightly further away, at around 30 kilometres from Pomona. But Pomona has many key industrial areas in close proximity that makes up for the lengthy distance to the JHB CBD. Kempton Park’s CBD is only around 15 minutes away from Pomona, making this suburb highly convenient for industrial business.

Malls/ Shopping

Although there are a few wholesale retail outlets within its borders, Pomona still has relatively limited shopping facilities. The adjacent area of Brentwood fills most shopping needs with its surplus of retail outlets. Brentwood has a handful of grocery stores, speciality stores and restaurants that can be easily accessed from Pomona. Popular brands that can be found in Brentwood include Pick ‘n Pay, PostNet and Spur.

Transport

Pomona does not have any train stations within its vicinity, with the closest train station being the OR Tambo location.  Pomona has also been left out of Kempton Park’s official bus stops, but the Bonaero Park bus stop is only a few roads away from Pomona’s Southern tip. Mini-bus taxis are active within the Pomona area and are an affordable option for getting around within the area.
